Brunswick County residents speak out about flooding caused by overdevelopment in the county at commissioner’s meeting

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — It’s been exactly one week since a powerful storm dumped several inches of rain in the Cape Fear, with Brunswick County getting hit particularly hard.
Brunswick County commissioner met for the first time since the storm, which was a major topic of discussion.
More than 20 residents spoke during the meeting, with many expressing frustration and anger at the commissioners for allowing overdevelopment within the county.
Many suggested overdevelopment was one of the major causes of the flooding the county experienced last week.
Haile Buggi and Garrett Baugher live in the Country Walk community in Winnabow.
They said their home and several others in their neighborhood flooded during last week’s storm, partially due to be built near swamps.
“5 of our homes have been flooded, they’re affected, they’re affected, they live at the top of the hill and their backyard floods. If they get that issue fixed, that’s just going to add more water to us. We have active swamps in our community, where the trees are all dead, you can tell its a swamp, there’s four or five or them in the community. How are you allowed to develop with swampland in the community? I doesn’t make any sense to me.”
Buggi and Baugher added that they aren’t sure what their next step will be, whether its rebuilding or taking a financial hit and moving.
Linda Baker spoke during the meeting. She said she isn’t against further development within the county, but that the county needs to be smart about where to build.
“Not against development, planned intelligent development is what I’m looking for and we saw tonight what happens, we saw all this week what happens when you don’t have intelligent planning,” Baker said.
Board chairman Randy Thompson said there is a lot of different areas the Board of Commissioners plans on looking at in the coming months, from evacuation plans to roadways to the county’s flood conditions.
